Animal Testing Should be banned Imagine having a hole drilled in your head without any anesthesia. Imagine being kept in eternal darkness your whole life because one or both eyes were sewn shut or even removed for no good reason. How about being clamped down to a table with shock-producing electrodes attached to your genitals. Laboratory animals are put through these horrors every day. There are many views on this topic that I would like cover in this paper. Many new experiments and laboratory practices have evolved with technology. This new technology doesn’t require animal testing. There are organs grown from cells in a petri dish. Why do we even consider such toxic chemicals to be put in cosmetic products in the first place? Why do humans live such unhealthy lifestyles that require new pharmaceuticals and surgeries? Why are ridiculous tests with no scientific reason to back them performed on animals? I acknowledge some animal testing did benefit mankind in historical medical research. From vaccinations, transplants, bypass surgery and joint replacement, nearly for all experiments for the prevention, treatment and cure of disease, the knowledge has been obtained through animal research. There may still be a medical test or research that would benefit from animal research. If this animal testing is the only medical option; it needs to be done in a humane way. Animals deserve the use of anesthesia, painkillers and proper food and housing. The key part in all this research is that animal testing is barbaric and archaic. First off lets get through a few basic facts. Animal testing costs over $12 billion dollars annually for the American public, so animal testing is actually very expensive. Everyone, whether they are for or against animal testing, are very biased about their ideas but I will also tell you about the valuable things that are generated from animal testing. Many things such as cleaners, pesticides, and herbicides are tested on animals to make sure they are safe as well. There are many different kinds of tests for different things. For example dogs are used for cardiovascular work and mice are used for cancer research. Now lets move on to all of the awful things coming from animal testing. I feel that animal testing is definitely giving us nformation but it is not worth it for all the pain the animals are experiencing. Some of the animals are not properly anesthetized. In fact, almost ten percent arent and even 9 % of the ones who are die. (www. PETA. org, 2013) I believe that these laboratories are not using the animals to the full extent anyway because all of the drugs that pass through animal testing either harm or kill humans 61% of the time. Is that the kind of results that should be coming out of this, especially since 33 animals die in a laboratory every second? After all, animal testing does help us find out answers for our medically related questions without us having to harm humans but we shouldnt have to harm animals either especially since there are so many alternatives. It is a big problem for some countries were they feel it is immoral or it has been made illegal to use a drug without it having been tested on an animal. In some countries they have to be tested on two different types of mammals. The people for animal testing could argue that they mostly just test the living patterns that occur when taking a certain drug that is being tested instead of going deep into the body where it actually would make a difference. I believe that this is true, and computer programs will not give as many results, but they display results more quickly. Therefore, given time, computer programs may be just as effective. They also argue that the scientists try as hard as they can to make their experiments the least painful as possible. Though the infor mation in the above paragraphs give a strong argument I still believe that it should be abolished. I have found animal testing to be cruel and wrong. Romeo And Juliet With Much Ado About Nothing William Shakespeare has written many different categories of plays: comedies, tragedies, romances, and histories. Comparisons are abundant between many of Shakespeare's works. Numerous comparisons can be made in characters, plot, and speech between Romeo and Juliet, which is a tragedy, and Much Ado About Nothing, which is a comedy. First, corresponding characters in both plays include villains, lovers, and friends in addition to characters who provide comic relief. These works have a similar villain. Tybalt of Romeo and Juliet is similar to Don John in Much Ado About Nothing in that both characters do not approve of the lover?s relationships and wish to break them up. Furthermore, Romeo and Juliet are similar to Claudio and Hero, who are the leading couples in each play. The comic relief in each play is the watch in Much Ado About Nothing and the servants in Romeo and Juliet. Also, Mercutio and Bene*censored* are both scornful of love. However, Bene*censored* does finally fall in love with Beatrice. Additionally, each male young lover has his group of friends in each play. However, in Much Ado About Nothing, Hero also has her group of acquaintances; Juliet does not. Also, several similarities in plot exist between Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing. In each of these plays, a romance between young lovers includes a false death of the female character, which the male character believes to be real. In Romeo and Juliet, there is a fatal ending; in which both of the lovers kill themselves because they would rather die than go on living without each other. However, in Much Ado About Nothing, the false death is discovered before there are any real deaths. Both couples do end up together, although one is in life and the other in death. In addition, similarities in speech occur in these works. Of course, the same Shakespearean language is in each work. Both of these plays have apparent oxymorons about love. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo says of his crush at the time, "O brawling love, O loving hate" (Shakespeare, 1.1.181). And in Much Ado About Nothing, Beatrice asks Bene*censored*, "But for which of my good parts did you first suffer love for me?" (Shakespeare 5.2. 63-64). Suffer love is an apparent oxymoron because it consists of two dissimilar terms. Also, the much overused rhetorical poetry is present in both of the plays. Additionally, the rules of Shakespearean addressing are used in both. In conclusion, William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado About Nothing can be compared in characters, plot, and speech. Principal Quantum Number Definition The principal quantum number is the  quantum number denoted by n and which indirectly describes the size of the electron orbital.  It is always assigned an integer value (e.g., n 1, 2, 3...), but its value may never be 0.  An orbital for which n 2 is larger, for example, than an orbital for which n 1. Energy must be absorbed in order for an electron to be excited from an orbital near the nucleus (n 1) to get to an orbital further from the nucleus (n 2). When in all reality I should have been breaking down the problem into sections so I could concentrate on the issue at hand. I will have to admit that shook my head allot over this because it was hard to look outside the box, as one might want to say. The goal was to get all three animals to the other side of the river without any of them being harmed by one of the other animals. The cat would eat the mouse if left alone, or the dog and the cat would fight if left alone. The strange part was the mouse and the dog could not be left on the other side of the bank either. What strategy did you use and how did you evaluate your progress? The strategy I took was that to find most common problem between the three animals. When I was evaluating the possibilities of getting them all three over the river it was overwhelming at first. I was able to attain that the main problem was the cat. The cat did not get along with the dog, nor did it get along with the mouse. The only obvious thing to do was to get the cat across the river first. This way the dog and the mouse were safe on the other bank. My problem was once I got the cat across the river and came back for one of the other animals I soon realized that either one I took next would cause a problem with the cat. Did you encounter any obstacles while solving the problem? I was upset that I could not get my mind to look outside the box. There had to be a reasonable solution to this problem. A few obstacles were encountered along the way while I was trying to solve this mystery. I would take the cat over first which was fine, because the dog and mouse was okay while on the original side of the river. As soon as I would take over one of the other animals with the cat all heck broke loose due to the cat not getting along with either the dog or the mouse. I knew there had to be an easier answer to this problem. After thinking carefully, I took the dog over first then the cat and mouse fought and then when I took the mouse over first then the dog and cat fought. It almost seemed impossible. Were you aware of this thought process as you worked through the problem? Then after careful consideration and the knowledge I had that the cat had to be the instigator in all this fighting I knew for sure that the cat had to go first. After reading the assigned reading to this issue I knew the answer was outside the box. I will admit that I even placed this task to my mom just to see if she would be as stumped as I was. Now as a recap; I knew the cat was the bad guy in this scenario, so the problem was how would I get the other two over there safely? Then it came to my mom and me! Wow what a revelation it was. Yes the cat was the mean one, and could not be left alone. So, you had to send the cat over first and return raft for another animal. Once you had the other animal over to the bank you had to put the cat back onto the raft and leave him alone on the first bank. This gave you the time you needed to get the other animal over to the other side. So in all reality the cat was the first one to cross over to the other side and the last one to be left on the first side. I do have to say this was a mind stretcher of an activity. I do enjoy trying to figure things like this out. It may take me a while but it is awesome when you do figure it out, at that point you knew you looked outside the box and found your answer.

A "Good" Man Is Hard To Find A "Goodman" Is Hard To Find I had never really analyzed any work of literature before this class. I read books and stories for fun but never to analyze them. I now understand that in any piece of literature there is always a background or hidden agenda that the author wants the reader to get from the reading. In this paper I am going to analyze Nathaniel's Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" to find the meaning. In "Young Goodman Brown" the protagonist experiences redemption, and through this redemption comes to an uncertain truth about himself and his life. This uncertain truth lies within his "faith" in himself, his community, and his wife. Young Goodman Brown is initially characterized in the story as a good Puritan who is devoted to his wife, the community, and the Christian way of life. His wife, Faith, symbolizes his faith in himself, the community, and "Faith" herself. Goodman Brown is struggling with temptation, the devil, and t he ways of the Christian faith. He doesn't feel that he can face this struggle. He has a low level of confidence in himself, as did the author, Hawthorne himself. Hawthorne wrote this story during a time when he himself was growing up doubting the Puritan faith. This story takes place at least a generation after the Salem Witch Trials. Both Brown and Hawthorne exhibit doubt in themselves as well as their Roland 2 ancestors. Goodman Brown is also struggling with his past. He must take a journey into the forest, which represents temptation and evil, but can also represent good. Salem can be described as a good place as well as an evil place. Several events take place during Brown's journey. On his way into the forest, Brown meets his "fellow traveler", who is easily recognized as the devil. The devil tries to get Brown to crossover from the Christian way of life to sin by offering his serpentine staff. He makes several advances, but Brown continually refuses. The devil tells Brown that his family has had dealings with him in the past (269). This makes Brown even more aware of his faith. He wants to remain a good man no matter what his ancestors were accused of, which was witchcraft and deviltry. Going on about his trip, Brown passes many of his mentors including Goody Cloyse and Deacon Gookin.

I do my part to maintain a well run purposeful program, responsive to participant needs. On their first day in our program, I make an effort to meet and greet our clients, the parents as well as the children. I ask the parents if they need any special requirements, accommodations or modifications to better service their children. I also ask the children which games they enjoy, and see if they have any questions for me about the program. This gives them an opportunity to know we have familiar activities that they are used to, gives them a chance to share their fears and worries about the program, and they also to get to know me a little better. With this information from the children, parents and our director, the counselors and I work together as planners, getting our weekly schedules for the children and taking turns delegating the activities. We come up with our own plans and put them together to form a enriched learning program. I attend monthly meetings, learning new ways to better service our clients, help each other and work together as a group. Our director is mostly our organizer, determining what our needs are. We discuss major issues such as safety and abuse, making me well aware of my responsibilities. As part of a cooperative co-worker, I do my personal best and help other counselors when they need assistance. I fill in for counselors if they need the day off and I am pretty good about schedule changes. We usually meet up before our day starts and talk about any issues we are having and try to find the best solutions for them. For our program to run smoothly, we must have all our paperwork in order. This includes organization and documentation of records. We do not have one set person for recordkeeping, but we all take part in keeping our paperwork up to date and properly put away. We have filing cabinets which contain copies and some originals of attendance sheets, bus rosters, allergy lists and medications, medical forms, daily log book, accident/incident reports, check payment logs and our own personal employee files. We fill out various forms on a daily basis and we must have everything signed and properly filed by the end of the day.

Genroy Hylton It is in human nature to indulge in acts that gratify our emotion. Psychologists and evolutionary theologist teach that the heart can convince the brain, but the inverse is not true for the brain. That means people will most likely do what makes them feel good and not what is the best for them. Throughout the novel Madame Bovary the author Gustave Flaubert uses literary devices such as symbolism to express the idea that pleasure inhibits the progress of human aspiration. The first instance of pleasure inhibiting progress is in chapter one.Charles Bovary the main character is doing some intense studying for his medical practice exams. The author states, on page ten, that Monsieur Bovary â€Å"breaks all good resolutions† and starts to go to cafes to play dominoes. The Arthur states that Monsieur Bovary starts to [lose his mind] over the game. Monsieur Bovary quickly loses his sensible self value, evidenced by the fact that he starts â€Å"spending evening †¦ in a dirty public room. The Arthur further goes to express his low self esteem for Monsieur Bovary at this point by metaphorically comparing the game of dominoes to a simple clicking of dotted sheep bones on a marble table.The specific form of pleasure, Monsieur Bovary is getting from his irresponsible actions, is the same of freedom. Throughout Monsieur Bovary’s life he has been subjected to follow under the authority of his parents. His farther always tried to push him to be aggressive, assertive, and strong willed. This can be deduced from the belief the farther has, which is â€Å"with enough nerve a man could always get a head in the world. † which can be found on page seven. The farther also attempts to â€Å"harden his child’s constitution†, with â€Å"strict-discipline†.This actually works to further put young Monsieur Bovary into a submissive role. When a child is forced to follow a strict set of rules and is not allowed to challenge the principle but instead obey them without an understanding of why he should obey them, the child will make it routine to submit himself to the authority of others and even repress his own desires. The mother further encourages young Monsieur’s to be submissive by forcing her personal interests on him, such as, singing and to listen to her on poor frustrated ambitions†.Young Monsieur Bovary does not want to listen to his mothers past sorrows, which he can not help cure, but he is forced to suppress his desires to her higher authority. The result of this is that young Monsieur Bovary will not create his own aspirations and follow the lead of who ever is willing to lead him, and in this case its his mother. She decides the path that young Bovary should take in medical school, and he obeys without a murmur because of the depression that has manifested between him and that has manifested between him and his mother over time.Being deprived of the opportunity to develop his own sense of self for such a long period makes it understandable that Monsieur Charles Bovary would get enraptured to the point of ecstasy by his newly found freedom. The experience was so intense for him, the experience of making his own choices, that the author states, Monsieur Bovary would feel a â€Å"pleasure that was almost sensual† just by touching the door knob to a cafe. It is at the cafe that Monsieur Bovary opens himself up to the desires of his heart. He indulges in the freedom that he could not experience in the past because of his parent’s authority.With his freedom, he ventures to learn a few verses of songs to sing at social events with friends and how to make punch. The simplistic nature of what he can only be comprehended by noting that his true pleasure comes from the fact that he chooses to engage in those activities. No one told him to. It was a choice that he made and he could only blame himself for the consequence of the actions that he has committed . He gained confidence in his ability to make choices, good or bad. Just the fact that he has the power to control some element of his life gives him a new sense of life.But sadly, energy is neither created nor destroyed; it is simply transferred from one party to the next. This statement relates Monsieur Bovary’s new sense of life in the sense that it does not come without sacrifice and that in order for him to be able to enjoy it in this life, death must occur in the other. Monsieur Bovary had a very important test that he had to take in order to be able to practice medicine. With the time he should have been using to prepare himself for the test, Monsieur Bovary spent that time enjoying himself at the cafe, doing what was described in the previous paragraph.Instead of using his mind and preparing himself for his exam, he was enslaved by the desires of his heart and enjoyed the pleasures of freedom. When he came to take the test, he found that he completely failed it and co uld not practice medicine. Not until Monsieur Bovary realized the effect of the consequence of his indulgence in pleasure, is he able to begin thinking with his mind. Not until he has to face the authority of his life, his parents, does he humble his desires for freedom.After he faces his mother with the news that he failed the medical exam, he begins to reason with himself and studied â€Å"ceaselessly†. He retook the test and past. The second example is Monsieur Bovary getting pleasure from Madame Bovary and it inhibits his ability to address the disrespect she shows toward him. Monsieur Bovary grew up with profound respect for his parents, especially his mother. He obeyed his mother when she told him to marry women much older then he was and who was very unattractive, but when he gets in a relationship with Emma Bovary, he starts to disregard his mother’s decisions.When the mother came to visit the newly wed couple, young Madame Bovary and she would get into argumen ts, described in chapter seven page forty. Monsieur Bovary would just watch his wife blatantly disrespect his mother by not humbling herself. He does not even try intercede and correct his wife’s behavior, because, as the Arthur states, â€Å"his [pleasure from] his wife is boundless†. If it still unclear that pleasure is a blinding force, the author states that â€Å" Emma seemed to his perfect, â€Å" even thought his â€Å" perfect† Emma dishonors him by not stinting herself when in the presence of his mother.The pleasure that he gets from young Madame Bovary distorts his logical to the extent that he begins to disregard the words of his mother because they are contrary to the words of wife instead of the inverse. Entering part then of the book, Madame Bovary becomes attached to the presence of a young man Leon. It is clear that she wanted to have an affair with him. When he leaves Madame Bovary is struck with despair and increases in her hostilities. Madam e Bovary is clueless to why she has progressed to such an ill state, and when he tries to console her and find out what’s wrong she shrugs and disrespectfully states â€Å"what of it? He is so enrapture by pleasure that he gets just from having Madame Bovary as his wife that he fears to do anything that might jeopardize their relationship he it slave to his desired, and, because had not conquered his desires, as all adults must, he regresses to child like behavior, evidenced in the text when it states that offer Madame Bovary brushes his sentient behavior away, he â€Å"shut himself in his consulting room †¦. Put his elbows on the table and wept. † He weeps like a child who does not know what to do and like a child writes a note to his mother.Monsieur Bovary still had problems heeding to any advice his mother would give to him because it all supported the idea that Madame Bovary lays a loaner; and monsieur Bovary could not agree to anything that would conflict wi th the image he has of his wife as â€Å"perfect†. She married to a husband who is deeply in love with her and is considered to be one of the top physicians. She is willing to risk her relationship by going out with strange men when she knows nothing about and can do nothing for her, but see so willingly buy them expensive gifts.Rudolph, one her mistresses, states that most of the gift she gives he does not accept simply because he had no heed. Flaubert has an older brother and a younger sister. Gustave’s sister died during childbirth when Flaubert was twenty-four. She left behind her daughter Caroline Hamard, who was raised by Gustave and his mother. His mother would live with him until his fiftieth year. As an adolescent of fifteen, Flaubert fell in love with an older married woman, Elisa Schlesinger, and remembered her ever after as a pure and innocent love.The young man was sent to Paris, France, to study law. An anion is attracted to the anode in electrolysis. Anions are typically larger than cations (positively charged ions) because they have extra electrons around them. How to Find the Taurus Constellation The constellation Taurus is visible for skygazers beginning in late October and early November. Its one of the few constellations that looks somewhat similar to its name, even though its a stick figure. It contains a number of fascinating stars and other objects to explore. Look for Taurus in the sky along the ecliptic, near the constellations Orion and Aries. It looks like a V-shaped pattern of stars with long horns extending out across the sky.   Check out the constellations Perseus, Taurus, and Auriga to see the Pleiades, Hyades, Algol, and Capella. Carolyn Collins Petersen The Story of Taurus Taurus is one of the oldest star patterns known to sky watchers. The first known records of Taurus date back 15,000 years, when ancient cave painters captured its likeness on the walls of underground rooms at Lascaux, France. Many cultures saw a bull in this pattern of stars. Ancient Babylonians told tales of the supreme goddess Ishtar sending Taurus- known as the Bull of Heaven- to kill the hero Gilgamesh. In the ensuing battle, the bull is torn apart and his head is sent to the sky. The rest of his body is said to make up other constellations, including the Big Dipper. Taurus was viewed as a bull in ancient Egypt and Greece, too, and the name persisted into modern times. Indeed, the name Taurus comes from the Latin word for bull.   The Brightest Stars of Taurus The brightest star in Taurus is alpha Tauri, also known as Aldebaran. Aldebaran is an orange-colored supergiant. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-de-baran, meaning leading star, because it seems to lead the nearby Pleiades star cluster across the sky. Beta is a bright white star, while Zeta is a binary star. From our point of view on Earth, we can see each of the two stars in Zeta eclipse each other every 133 days.   The constellation Taurus is also known for the Taurids meteor showers. Two separate events, the Northern and Southern Taurids, occur in late October and early November. The southern shower is the product of objects left behind by Comet Encke, while the Northern Taurids are created when materials from the Comet 2004 TG10 stream through Earths atmosphere and are vaporized.   Deep-Sky Objects in Taurus The Taurus constellation has a number of interesting deep-sky objects. Perhaps the best known is the Pleiades star cluster. This cluster is a collection of several hundred stars, but only the seven brightest can be seen without a telescope or binoculars. The Pleiades stars are hot, young blue stars that move through a cloud of gas and dust. NASA/ESA/STScI The Hyades, another star cluster in Taurus, makes up the V-shape of the bulls face. The stars in the Hyades form a spherical grouping, with the brightest ones making the V. They are mostly older stars, moving together through the galaxy in an open cluster. It will likely break apart in the distant figure, with each of its stars traveling along a separate path from the others. The Crab is a supernova remnant left over from the explosion of a giant star more than 7,500 years ago. The light from the explosion reached Earth in the year 1055 AD. The star that exploded was at least nine times the mass of the Sun and may have been even more massive. Crab Nebula in several wavelengths of light including visible and x-ray. SAF has developed extensive and heading towards the direction of the third Generation SAF. In the second form of the framework explains the pattern of leadership for the desired direction. The uniqueness of this framework gives pictorial understanding the meaning and thought leadership in the two forms of order. Each form has a framework as a distinctive feature descriptions are summarized as follows: In a circle each leader must emphasize affect people with a good understanding of the mission and objectives, operating environment and the desired results. Triangle provides a framework to determine the need for leaders to effective leadership in the SAF. Benefits of this framework create awareness in performing their duties and responsibilities and know where the weaknesses that needs to be improved. For understanding the context of leadership, the triangle shape consists of four domains which are values, competencies, styles and self. The form of the circle can identify the contextual through three domains, namely the mission and objectives, operating environment and desired outcomes  [3]  . This context called the SAF Leadership 24-7 as shown in Figure 1  [4]  . Every building blocks affect a leader and moving journey through the contacts contained in a circle. In the skill domains are divided into 3 levels of leadership of different Behaviours; Direct, Organizational and strategic. The style approach emphasises the behaviour of the leaders. Style approach is different from trait and skills approaches because it focuses on what leaders do rather than are. There are two primary behaviours which are task behaviours and relationship behaviours. The task behaviours facilitate goal accomplishment or reach the objectives. Relationship behaviours help subordinates feel comfortable with themselves, with each other and the situation. The central focus is how leaders combined these two behaviours. Blake Mouton developed a model that described leadership behaviours on a managerial or leadership grid. The basic tenet is that based on concern for production and concern for people, the leadership style will fall into one of the 4 quadr ants  [6]  . By understanding the behaviour that lead style can be seen how you play the role as a leader. The main focus is what leaders do and how they act. As shown in Figure 2, the managerial behaviour is the preferred style area to operate which is both concern for people and results, and it also depend the area of environment you operate. Leadership and management share many similarities. Both leadership and management involve influence, working with people, and working with effective goal management. However, the fields of leadership and management can also be considered very different. Take for example, Ship CO lead the command of the ship for patrol with his crews. When CO takes charge on planning and controlling, he is involved in management. When CO became manager in influencing the ships crew to achieve their task, he is involved in leadership. Both processes affect the ships crew to achieve the task. Overall, this is depends on the tasking given where the CO can take more leadership and less management or vice-versa. Do I want more leadership/management oriented responsibilities? Again taking an example as Ship CO where his leadership may vary depending on his task and works with his crew. His management function will demand more as to look after the men including the ship so ship organisation will run efficiently. As shown in Figure 3 above, management is about seeking order and stability; leadership is about seeking adaptive and constructive  [9]  . When there is more leadership responsibilities, it required time and concentration of effort for Ship CO that will affect changes on his crew. My strength and weakness By understanding the leadership in context, more in-depth thought to show that there are weaknesses in my area of leadership. In lesson 1 to 5, can be make a distinction whether my leadership style and leadership effectiveness for this has been achieved or need to be developed. As shown in the diagram on Figure 1 above, the leadership competency framework model, generally through this form of triangle and circle guidance can establish from one of 4 building blocks. The understanding of military leadership and the difference between management, leadership and command give an overview and their relationship to my reflection. During this course, the main focus is to look and think into my Personal Mastery and Self. On top of that, the 5 competency domains and 14 skill domains can be taken as education knowledge. The MBTI tool is described about the preferences to distinguish my type of personality whether the function of judging (thinking and feeling) and perceiving functions (sensing Intuition). My profile obtained was based on ENTJ (Direct Decide), strength of character that helped me through character Extraversion and Thinking. At the end of September, Malcolm Gladwell, a staff writer for the New Yorker magazine and author of The Tipping Point and Blink, published a piece, Small Change: Why the Revolution Will not be Tweeted, in that magazine making the argument that social media tools like Facebook and Twitter were overhyped as agents of social change at best and at worst, completely useless in helping move the kind of high-risk actions that are strong enough to bring down governments and change cultures. Using the wave of sit-ins that swept the South in 1960 during the Civil Rights Movement as his prime example, Gladwell rests his thesis upon two points.First, movements and high-risk socio-political actions are carried out by people who have strong ties to each other or a strong level of commitment to the movement itself and the actions they undertake serve to reinforce those ties. By the end of your pregnancy, you should only have gained in the range of 20 to 35 pounds. It is also very important not to or take any that have not been! approved by your doctor. Many women continue to exercise during most of their pregnancy; however, it is important to check with your doctor first to decide on an exercise program that is right for you. During the first visit, you will be asked for details about your complete medical history, including medical conditions, surgeries, past pregnancies and habits such as smoking and drinking alcohol. You will have a complete physical as well, with examination of the heart, lungs and breasts in addition to a Pap smear and pelvic exam. The doctor may order tests to rule out sexually transmitted diseases. You will need to give samples of blood for tests to assess your blood type and blood count, to see whether you have hepatitis or HIV, and to check whether you are immune to rubella. Additional testing may be done depending on your history. In addition to the routine blood work with the first visit, blood tests are done between 16-20 weeks and again at 28 weeks. The former is an optional test to screen for neural-tube defects such as spina bifida and Down syndrome. a repeat blood count to check for anemia. Depending on your age or a family history of certain birth defects, y! ou may be offered genetic testing (CVS or amniocentesis) early in the pregnancy. Subsequent exams are usually every four weeks until your 28th week of pregnancy, then every two weeks until your 37th week. After that, you will be seen weekly. Most of these visits involve checking your weight and blood pressure and testing your urine for protein and sugar. The doctor will listen to the babys heartbeat and measure your uterus, the size of the uterus in centimeters should equal the weeks of pregnancy. She will ask how you are feeling, whether the baby is moving and whether you are experiencing any problems such as cramping, bleeding, headaches or excessive swelling. You should write down any questions you have and ask them each visit. During the last few weeks of pregnancy, your doctor may wish to do a pelvic exam to see if your cervix has begun to dilate The education about what is good for babies and what is harmful, that mothers miss when they dont get the earliest possible care is very critical. If you do not receive any maternity care then you are putting yourself and your baby at serious risks and future problems.
